What is it: A luxury coupe with just about every possible piece of tech Mercedes can throw at it, new for 2018.

Key Competitors: BMW 4-Series, Audi A5, BMW 6-Series

Base Price: $62,395 As-Tested Price: $86,685

Highlights: New inside and out for 2018. The smooth twin-turbo V6 six provides plenty of thrust to push this gorgeous shape down the road.

Our Opinion: The ’18 Mercedes E400 Coupe is among the best midsize luxury coupes out there.

It’s slightly longer and wider than the outgoing E-Class coupe, and the new shape is utterly handsome and purposeful-looking. The interior is gorgeous, with materials and build quality to match. It also grows slightly, now offering more rear-seat room. Yup, you can actually fit two adult humans back there, if that matters to you.

The E400 sticker price might make some gasp, but consider our test car is loaded to the gunnels with stuff such as a $5,400 stereo and a $9,350 package called Premium 3. The latter includes active-park assist, wireless phone charging, widescreen digital instruments, active steering and lane-change assist, and on and on it goes. No, the car doesn’t drive itself, but it can follow other cars on straightaways and through corners for a short period.

The twin-turbo V6 and nine-speed automatic trans is the only combo available; you choose rear- or 4Matic all-wheel drive. The new E coupe is a superb driver, able to travel great distances in near-S-Class comfort. In fact, that’s probably its best trait. It’s not a sports car (not a complaint), meaning the V6’s power is sufficient, steady and smoothly delivered. As we said before, the car won’t catch you off-guard, but it’s not supposed to.

Sport and sport-plus modes can make things more interesting on winding roads, and the paddle shifters can also add a little fun. Overall, though, the car feels happiest loping along in comfort mode like it’s out for an easy morning jog. For the perfect combination of comfort, smoothness and refinement, try one. I doubt you’ll be disappointed.
